In the third in our series of start-up stories, ICE member and founder of Bomper Studio, Emlyn Davies shares his experience of going from a one man band to a busy studio.

What did you do before you started Bomper Studio?Emlyn
I’d always wanted to work in design, and in my final year studying Product Design at University of South Wales I won 3rd place in the POPAI student design awards. While celebrating at the awards night I was approached with an amazing offer to work at Cadbury in Bournville Birmingham, where I spent the next tenyears as a 3D Designer and Consultant, balancing my time between the in-house design studio and freelancing for some renowned global agencies and blue chip companies.

What made you decide to start your own business?
Moving back to South Wales to be with family in 2013, it felt like the perfect time to take the leap and start a studio of my own. No amount of experience can prepare you to give up the security of a career and build a business from the ground up, it’s just something you have to be brave and jump into! Don’t get me wrong, it takes serious planning (and some thrifty saving) but when you’re ready, go for it.

What has been the most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur?

Bomper-family-portraitEvery day is rewarding when you’re an entrepreneur; scary, but definitely rewarding. Registering your
business name, holding your business cards in your hands, making your first sale or starting your first paid client job – seeing your idea and your business come to life is incredibly rewarding. Then you get to see the business continue to grow, day by day, as a direct result of your hard work.

What has been the most challenging part of starting your own business?
Starting out is always tough. Even the best ideas can sometimes seem impossible to get off the ground. But with the right support, and a strong belief in yourself and your business idea, it all comes down to commitment and hard work. Money (or more specifically, the lack thereof!) will always be the biggest concern when starting out. But if you really want something it’s worth the sacrifice – over the past couple of years being here at Welsh ICE we’ve seen a lot of successful businesses, born from nothing but a good idea and hard work. It can be done!

What tip would you give someone thinking about starting up?Bomper Studio in the office
When I first started out it was just me, sat alone at a desk. We’re now a busy studio, with a strong team of talented artists, working with huge agencies and household brands. This year we won an Innovation Award, and continue to go from strength to strength. There’s no secret formula for success, but we’re proof that it can happen. Be dedicated, be hardworking, be brave, and always remember that you’re not alone! There’s so much support available if you know where to look, from funding and training to mentoring and friendly advice, and communities like Welsh ICE who offer it all …right here in South Wales.
